What are the Benefits of Tax Planning for your Small Business?
Tax planning is an integral part of all small businesses.
This involves assessing your small business’s financial situation, particularly with profit or loss, to enable you to make appropriate tax planning strategies. Tax planning offers a range of benefits, such as:
- Reduce your tax liability – our small business tax accountants can maximise your deductibles to help minimise the amount of tax you have to pay
- Improved forecasting – knowing where your business’s financial position helps with seeing the bigger picture of your business to identify opportunities and addressing shortcomings
- Increased investment opportunities – reduction of tax paid will result in increased cash to invest in your business

How Our Small Business Tax Planning Works
We start with your results for the year so far and project them to 30 June. That gives an estimate of the tax the business, and you as its owner, are likely to face, while there is still time to act on it.
It suits sole traders, partnerships, companies and trusts with a profitable year under way, owners thinking about a large purchase, and businesses whose profit has changed a lot from last year. Trusts also need their distribution resolutions made by 30 June, so we cover those in the same conversation.
Common topics include the timing of equipment purchases, super contributions for you and your staff, and setting money aside for the tax bill. Super contributions count towards the cap for the year the fund receives them, so a payment made in the last days of June can fall into the next year.
What We Need From You, and When
The estimate relies on current figures, so we work from your accounting file in Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks once the books are reconciled to a recent month.
We also ask about anything that will change the picture before 30 June: assets you plan to buy or sell, new staff, a change in how you pay yourself, or income from outside the business.
By the end, you know roughly what tax to expect and which steps need to happen before 30 June. When the year closes, we use the same figures for your returns, including any company tax return.
Our director, Davie Mach, has over 15 years of experience advising businesses on tax, and our team are chartered accountants.
