Looking For Crypto Tax Advisors in Sydney?
Crypto is not a side note on your tax return anymore. The Australian Taxation Office now receives transaction data directly from Australian exchanges and matches it against what you lodge, so a portfolio you have not reported is a portfolio the australian tax office can already see.
BOX Advisory Services is a specialist crypto accounting firm based in Sydney. Our cryptocurrency tax accountants work out what you actually owe across trades, staking, DeFi and NFTs, lodge it correctly, and make sure you are claiming everything you are entitled to claim. We are registered with the Tax Practitioners Board, agent number 25452828.
Do You Pay Tax on Cryptocurrency in Australia?
Yes. Cryptocurrency tax applies to almost everyone holding digital assets, and it applies whether or not you converted anything back to Australian dollars. The tax office treats crypto assets as property rather than currency, so disposing of one carries the same tax implications as selling a parcel of shares.
What changes your outcome is not how much you hold. It is whether you are treated as an investor or a trader, and which transactions constitute taxable events across the income year.
Your Crypto Tax Obligations at a Glance
Capital gains tax obligations
Every disposal of a crypto asset is a CGT event. Your capital gains tax obligations run from the first disposal, not from the first withdrawal to your bank. Gains and losses are calculated in Australian dollars at the time of each transaction.
Income tax on crypto earnings
Staking rewards, mining proceeds, airdrops and interest from lending are income rather than capital. They sit in your income tax return at market value on the day you received them, and they carry different tax implications to a simple buy and hold position.
Reporting and record keeping
Your tax obligations include keeping records that support every figure you lodge. Those reporting and compliance obligations sit with you, not with the exchange, and they survive the exchange going offline.
Are You a Crypto Trader or a Crypto Investor?
Crypto investors and capital gains tax
Most crypto investors hold for capital growth. Their crypto assets sit under the capital gains tax rules, and where an asset is held for more than 12 months before disposal the 50% CGT discount may apply.
Losses can be carried forward and offset against future capital gains.
Crypto traders and trading stock
A trader runs something closer to a business: volume, system, a commercial intention to profit from short term movement. Their holdings are treated as trading stock and the profit is assessable income taxed at ordinary rates.
There is no CGT discount, but expenses and losses are treated more generously.
Which one are you?
It is a question of fact, not a box you tick, and the classification materially changes your tax liabilities. It is the first thing a cryptocurrency tax accountant should assess, because the tax implications of getting it wrong run in both directions.
Which Crypto Transactions Trigger Tax?
Most people are surprised by how many events count. As a general guide, if you disposed of a crypto asset you have triggered a CGT event, even if no Australian dollars moved.
Crypto to crypto trades
Swapping one coin for another is a disposal. You crystallise a gain or loss on the coin you gave up, valued in Australian dollars at the time of the swap. This catches out active traders who assumed cryptocurrency tax only applied on the way back to cash.
Staking rewards and yield
Rewards from staking, lending or providing liquidity are generally assessable income at market value when received. When you later dispose of those coins a separate CGT event applies, with the cost base set at the value you already declared.
DeFi
Wrapping, bridging, providing liquidity and entering or exiting a protocol can each be a disposal depending on how the arrangement is structured. DeFi is where general guidance is least reliable, and where the tax implications turn entirely on your actual transaction history.
NFTs
NFTs are CGT assets. Buying one with crypto is a disposal of that crypto. Selling it is a disposal of the NFT. Royalties received as a creator are generally income rather than capital.
Airdrops and chain splits
An established token received through an airdrop is generally income at market value on receipt. New tokens from a chain split take a nil cost base, so the full proceeds are a gain when you eventually sell.
Mining
Coins you mine are income when received. If mining is run as a business rather than a hobby, the treatment of equipment, electricity and depreciation changes, and so does your ability to claim losses.
Lost, stolen or scammed crypto
You may be able to claim a capital loss, but only with evidence: the wallet address, the date you lost access, and what you have done to try to recover it. Keep the paper trail, because this is an area the tax office looks at closely.
The ATO Already Has Your Exchange Data
What the data matching program covers
Australian exchanges report account and transaction information to the tax office under its data matching program. That data is compared against lodged returns and mismatches generate contact. Not reporting is no longer a passive position, it is a discrepancy waiting to be flagged.
If you have unreported years
Tell us early. Voluntary disclosure carries materially better penalty treatment than a review the tax office starts itself, and we handle those conversations regularly. Amending earlier years on your own terms is almost always the better outcome.
Record Keeping and Crypto Tax Software
What you need to keep
The date of every transaction, what was received and disposed of, the Australian dollar value at the time, the purpose of the transaction, and the counterparty or wallet address.
Why exchange exports are not enough
A CSV export is a starting point, not a complete record. It will not capture wallet to wallet transfers, offshore platforms, or anything you did in DeFi. We work with the major crypto tax software platforms to reconstruct a full history, then check it rather than trusting the output.
Holding Digital Assets Through a Company, Trust or SMSF
When a structure makes sense
Holding digital assets inside a company or trust changes the rate, the access to the CGT discount, and who ultimately pays. A company pays a flat rate but loses the 50% discount. A trust can stream gains to beneficiaries. Neither is automatically better, and moving assets into a structure is itself a disposal.
Crypto in a self managed super fund
An SMSF can hold crypto, but only with the right documentation: the investment strategy has to contemplate it, the assets must be held in the fund’s name, and they must be kept separate from personal wallets. Getting this wrong risks the fund’s compliance status, which is a far bigger problem than the tax.
Tax planning before a large disposal
The tax solutions available to you shrink dramatically once a disposal has happened. If you are contemplating a significant sale, the conversation is worth having beforehand, when timing across income years and the 12 month holding period are still options.

You deal with the same tax accountant every time, someone who already knows your holdings and your history. Our accounting services also cover tax planning across the rest of your affairs, because crypto rarely sits on its own.
Registered, and accountable for it

What Our Crypto Tax Services Cover
Crypto tax returns for investors and traders, reconstruction of incomplete transaction histories, voluntary disclosures for unreported years, structuring advice where crypto is held through a company or trust, and tax planning ahead of a large disposal. Our accounting services extend to the rest of your affairs if you want one tax accountant across everything. We quote a fixed fee after looking at the size and state of your history rather than from a price list.
Common Cryptocurrency Tax Mistakes
Only reporting withdrawals to your bank
The most common error by a distance. Cryptocurrency tax attaches to disposals, not to the moment cash reaches your account, so a year of active trading with no withdrawal can still produce a substantial bill.
Missing the cost base on transferred coins
Move coins between wallets and the transfer itself is not taxable, but the original cost base has to travel with them. Lose that history and the tax office position is that your cost base is nil, which makes the entire proceeds a gain.
Assuming a loss year needs no return
Capital losses are only useful if they are reported. Declaring them in the year they happen is what lets you carry them forward against future gains, and it is the cheapest cryptocurrency tax planning available.
Treating an accountant as an end of year job
By July the decisions are made. Accounting services are worth more to you in May than in October, because that is when timing a disposal across income years is still on the table.
