What a Contractor Accountant Does for You

We work with contractors, consultants, locums and freelancers who invoice through their own ABN, a company or a trust. As your contractor accountant, we look after the tax questions that come with working for yourself.

The first is whether the personal services income rules apply to you, because they affect what you can claim and how your income is taxed. Then there is when to register for GST, which structure to use, and which expenses are deductible.

Contract income usually arrives without tax taken out, so we help you plan for the GST and income tax you will owe. The ATO may also enter you into PAYG instalments based on your latest return, which spreads your income tax across the year.

Our director, Davie Mach, has over 15 years of experience advising businesses on tax, and every client has a client manager they can email or call.

Your Paperwork, Software and Due Dates

At the first meeting we look at how you are engaged: who your clients are, how you are paid and whether you work through an agency. From there we set out what needs registering and which returns you will lodge each year.

If you invoice from Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks, we work from the same file, so your BAS and tax return come from one set of records. If you do not use software yet, we can set it up for you.

Once you are registered for GST, you lodge a BAS for each period, and most small businesses, contractors included, lodge quarterly. Your individual tax return is due by 31 October if you lodge it yourself, and as a registered tax agent we can use the ATO lodgement program, which gives later due dates for many returns. If you contract through a company, it lodges its own company tax return.

Book a free 20-minute meeting with one of our accountants for a later date, or call 1300 411 022. If you are about to sign a contract and need advice sooner, you can book a paid priority appointment on our booking page.

Frequently Asked Questions

They can. The personal services income (PSI) rules can apply when more than half of what you are paid under a contract is for your own skills or effort. They do not apply if you are a personal services business.

You can self-assess as one if you pass the results test for at least 75% of that income, or if less than 80% of it comes from one client and you pass one of the other tests. We work through the tests with you.

If you run your own contracting business, you will generally need an ABN. You must register for GST within 21 days of your GST turnover reaching $75,000 or more. We can arrange both through our business registrations service.

It depends on your income, your risks and how you want to run the business. A company does not get you around the PSI rules: if they apply, the income can be treated as yours even when it is paid to a company or trust. We talk through the options before you set anything up.

Your individual tax return, BAS, bookkeeping and, if you contract through a company, its company tax return. Every client has a dedicated client manager, with unlimited email and phone support.
